NAMIWalks, the signature annual fundraiser and walkathon event for NAMI affiliates, was held at Madison’s Olin-Turville Park on Sunday, October 5, 2014. Registration and entertainment began at 10:30 AM with the walk along Lake Monona kicking off at noon. The emcee was NBC 15 Anchor and Honorary NAMIWalks Chair, Leigh Mills.
NAMIWalks signals the beginning of Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), October 5–11. The purpose of the event, and this nationally-designated week, is to increase public understanding about these biologically-based conditions, to reduce the stigma and misinformation associated with them, and to get across the message that treatment works!
Importantly, NAMIWalks is also a time to celebrate the lives of individuals and their families living with mental illness and acknowledge their struggles as well as to remember and honor our family members and friends who have tragically lost their lives to mental illness.
In 2015, you are invited to join or donate to “Trevor’s Team – NAMI Green County” which will be walking for the seventh consecutive year. Donations raised make possible NAMI Green County’s local programs and services of education, advocacy, and support. Conni Bigler, NAMI Green County Board member, took on the task of leading this fundraiser in 2009 in memory of her son, Trevor Moen. Trevor took his life in October of 2007 after struggling with bipolar disorder and depression for several years. Tragically, there have been too many others from our area who have also lost the battle with a mental illness and in whose memory we walk.
Participants may collect donations from their family members, friends, and associates in support of their participation. All walkers raising $100 or more will receive a NAMIWalks T-shirt.
Select your preference of either joining the team (there’s no registration fee and you may set up your own contribution page) or making a donation to a specific walker or the team. You may also donate by mailing a check made out to “NAMI” to NAMI Green County, P.O. Box 343, New Glarus, WI 53574. Donations will be gratefully accepted. Sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who has already contributed!
